Calligraphy Shortcuts and Essentials
Calligraphy Crash Course: Three Keys to Save Three Years of Detours
Many people believe calligraphy is a "slow craft," taking at least ten years to master. This is both true and false. To become a calligraphy master, indeed, requires a lifelong pursuit; however, if you merely wish to write beautiful and elegant brush characters, mastering the correct methods can show significant improvement in just three months.
I interviewed several professional teachers and, drawing from my own decades of calligraphy practice, summarized three core "fast-learning essentials." These methods are neither esoteric nor mysterious; they are simply the unspoken "shortcuts" known among professionals.
Key 1: Choosing a Copybook is Like Choosing a Teacher – Stick to One
The biggest mistake beginners make is "being fickle" – one day they find Yan Zhenqing's majestic style appealing, the next they fall in love with Zhao Mengfu's elegance, and the day after they switch to Wang Xizhi. They change copybooks after writing less than three pages, and as a result, after three years, they haven't grasped the essence of any particular master.
The correct approach is: deeply copy one master, thoroughly understand it, then move on. For regular script, start with Yan Zhenqing's "Duobao Pagoda Stele" or Ouyang Xun's "Jiucheng Palace." For running script, you can choose Zhao Mengfu's "Ode to the Nymph of the Luo River" or Lu Jianzhi's "Wen Fu." Once you've chosen, do not switch copybooks for at least six months.
The secret lies in "single-character intensive copying" – don't copy the entire text. Instead, write one character ten or twenty times until its form and spirit are 70-80% similar to the copybook, then move to the next character. Focus on only three to five characters each day. After three months, you will have built a foundation for four to five hundred core Chinese characters. With this foundation of four to five hundred characters, you will naturally be able to apply what you've learned to other unpracticed characters.
